Guess what? Trout is the new lobster. You will find it on fine-dining menus far and wide. And the premier place to get it? Right here!
Fred Shaver started the hatchery as a hobby in 1963, and now it supplies delicious trout to restaurants and to clubs wishing to stock their rivers and ponds with the sporty fish. The hatchery, still part of the Shaver family, boasts a casting and catching pond and some stock tanks where you can see the fish chilling in the cool shady waters. If you are lucky (and the fish not so lucky), you might catch sight of a bear or a great blue heron filling their bellies. Naughty guys!
The hatchery also has an old-fashioned farmstand for buying fresh trout to take home and cook or a smoked one to serve as an appetizer or on a salad. Mmmmm.
