Steep yourself in 1970s lore, attend a transformative concert, drink locally distilled spirits and enjoy yourself lakeside with a slice of pizza (from heaven).
I am sure you know by now that the Woodstock Music and Art Fair of 1969 did not actually take place in Woodstock, but in Bethel on Max Yasgur’s farm. It was originally supposed to be in Wallkill, but that didn’t work out. So, from August 15 to 17, 1969, half a million revelers flooded here. A large concrete slab marks the site (at 236 Hurd Road) where you can still look out over the field and feel the love.

As you explore the area, you will find that the town of Bethel includes nine hamlets: Bethel, Black Lake, Briscoe, Bushville, Hurd Settlement, Kauneonga Lake, Smallwood, Swan Lake and White Lake.
Where do we go from here?
From Bethel, head to these other towns and their hamlets. Easy direct driving routes. Ask your GPS or get out your map.
Liberty: Come on over for cute antique shops, the Tractor Supply Store, plus the Rolling River Inn. North of Bethel.
Highland: This is the smallest of all 15 towns in Sullivan County with some interesting Revolutionary War history. The hamlet of Barryville delivers good outdoor fun and the Stickett Inn. South of Bethel.
Thompson: Need for speed? Raceways are here. And casinos. East of Bethel.
Cochecton: Find Henning's Local here, as well as NY's oldest train station. West of Bethel.
Try these spots first so you don't waste time getting lost somewhere further away. Getting lost does not mean trying to be efficient about it! ;)
