Dai Bosatsu, a Rinzai Zen Buddist monastery, started here, on 1,400 acres at the near end of a seasonal road in 1976. Replete with deep forests, meadows and a glistening lake, the monastery is worth a visit. Call before you go to arrange a tour; I did it with a friend some years ago and loved it. Now they offer a welcoming array of programming from in-depth retreats and work study for serious Buddhists to introductory workshops and open houses for those who are just curious.

The lake is the highest in the Catskills, silent and serene ... except for the birds and other wildlife. The monastery has its own garden whose gardener gave me a tour ... and some veggies to take home.
