Take Off Your Coat and Stay A While

Updated: Aug 2, 2019

Throughout Farm Girl’s Guide, you will find some special inns, hotels, motels and B&Bs to try. But these are just the tip of the iceberg. You can also rent your own place or camp in the Catskills and both offer a unique perspective on this magical region. New spots are popping up all the time. I will continue to highlight new ones!

As much as I like to travel and to explore, I love to have a place to snuggle in, to unpack my things and to make it my own. If you want to find a place of your own for the weekend, for the week or for the season, plenty of options await.

Many inns are one-offs: single facilities, owned and operated by friendly, caring people. One proprietor with four stellar inns — Foster Supply Company — is worth keeping an eye on. Foster Supply has a great approach to hospitality and the region, Sims and Kirsten Foster aim to build to 180 keys and at least one Michelin star. They are stars themselves in the area’s renaissance.

Airbnb (airbnb.com) is fun to surf for options. The best way to find good spots is to search by town or hamlet. Some of the shopkeepers with impeccable taste also have well appointed houses or apartments on Airbnb. If you’ve never tried it before and you’re willing to roll the dice, it’s worth a look, but the standards are all over the place and sometimes it’s hard to tell if what you’re getting is up to snuff. That said, it’s the best way to find an Airstream or a tipi for the weekend!

If you are looking for more of a curated set of options, try Red Cottage (redcottage.com and @redcottage). Growing in leaps and bounds across Sullivan, Ulster and Delaware counties, they have just what you’re looking for even when you’re not sure what that is. A number of their special spots are included throughout Farm Girl’s Guide to tempt you.

The Catskills has too many campsites to mention, but if that’s what you’re looking for, you can find and reserve them easily on the New York State Parks website. If you’d like something a little more private and white glove (where you show up to a pre-vetted site and your tent is already pitched) Tentrr (tentrr.com and @tentrr) is the way to go. Don’t get me wrong here … this is still camping in the great outdoors and a great way to connect with nature, see the stars, just without all the hassle.

It’s great to visit the Catskills for the weekend no matter where you stay. But I promise you, it will not be enough. There’s so much to explore, so much to taste, to see, to climb that it becomes inevitable that you return, for longer and longer stints until you have to put down roots. We’re working on our second decade here and sometimes I feel like I should spend a week in another hamlet just so I can get to know it the right way. Slowly, deeply.

I invite you to come for a weekend, but I have a feeling you are going to want to stay for a lifetime.
