Only 819 people lived here in 2010 making it the smallest town in Sullivan County. Author Stephen Crane, most famous for The Red Badge of Courage, did some of his best writing here at his brother Edmund’s house in the late 1800s.
Forestburgh has seven hamlets, which include: Forestburgh, Fowlerville, Hartwood, Hartwood Club, Merriewold Park, St. Josephs, and my favorite, Squirrels Corner.
15 historical markers
From the site of a stage coach station to where Stephen Crane wrote, Forestburgh has a trail of history. Come and see how many of the 15 historical hot spots you can find in this town. If you need a hint, ask a local (I strongly recommend this method) or check hmdb.org (if you are a chicken ... bock, bock).
Where do we go from here?
From Forestburgh, head to these other towns and their hamlets. Easy direct driving routes. Ask your GPS or get out your map.
Thompson: Need for speed? Raceways are here. And casinos. To the north.
Lumberland: You will find Handsome Eddy lounging on the shores of the Delaware River here. Very scenic. Head west.
