The Town of Fremont, NY

Updated: Nov 24, 2018

If you're from Fremont, give Farm Girl a little love and send her a note about your favorite spots. Here's what I know ...

Fremont has 11 hamlets, including Acidalia, Basket, Fernwood, Fremont Center, Hankins, Lakewood, Long Eddy, Mileses, Obernburg, Pleasant Valley, and Tennanah Lake.

The Basket Historical Society of the Upper Delaware Valley is a citizen-run historical society that collects the local history of the area, puts on special events and brings the community together. They also put out the ECHO newsletter, which includes stories and pictures about the area and its past. It's on State Route 97, if you're in the 'hood. To learn more, try (845) 887-6703 or visit its website.

Hankins, believed to be the site of the first settlement in Fremont, has a number of spots that are on the National Register of Historic Places. You might want to check them out if you are passing through.

Hankins District No. One Schoolhouse

Circa 1845

Sullivan County Road 132

Anthony Manny House

Circa 1890

6 Hankins Road

Hankins Stone Arch Bridge

Circa 1905

Sullivan County Road 94

My absolutely favorite spots in Fremont are in Long Eddy. Two posts follow. Another favorite about Fremont is a political rally cry from General John C. Fremont, who was an anti-slavery Civil War general. "Free Soil, Free Speech, Free Men, FRE-MONT!"

Where do we go from here?

From Fremont, head to these other towns and their hamlets. Easy direct driving routes. Ask your GPS or get out your map.

  • Rockland: Rockland is rich with much to do in Livingston Manor and Roscoe with the Willowemoc and Beaverkill rivers rolling by. Head north/northeast.

  • Delaware: The hamlet of Callicoon is here, not in the town of Callicoon. What?! Check out the brewery and shops in this one. Head south.

  • Callicoon: Home to Callicoon Center (strike up the band!) and the North Branch Inn. Go east.

Get busy getting lost.
