Joan Wulff and her late husband, Lee, both legends in the fly fishing world, started the Wulff School in 1979, which still welcomes students to learn to cast and fish in April, May and June. The school's 100-acre property includes casting ponds and access to the nearby famed Beaverkill River. Now run by Sheila Hassan, a casting expert hand-picked by Joan, and a stable of talented fisherpersons, it’s as good as ever. Sign up early because it books months in advance. You can stay at the nearby Beaverkill Valley Inn where you can talk about your progress over a delicious and intimate dinner.

Joan is the real deal, a stalwart advocate and role model well into her 90s, who has transformed how men, women and children learn to cast and fish through her books on the topic and in-depth courses offered at the school. If she’s not traveling when you are there, she will likely stop by to correct your form. Tight lines!
